Governors’ report 2015-16

In keeping with the statutory requirement for Governors to meet 3 times a year, the Local Advisory Board has met half termly (6 times a year) and the Pay Committee once.  The Principal and Chair of Governors attend the termly District Advisory Board.

At meetings, amongst other items, Governors discussed finances & the budget, Pupil Premium & Sports Premium funding and impact, interventions and impact, staffing, Safeguarding and behaviour (including attendance & punctuality), the curriculum, Health & Safety, premises, data/results and monitoring of policy implementation.  Governors take a strategic view and support and challenge the Principal by holding the School to account, whilst the operational (day to day running of the School) is the Principal’s responsibility.  Governors are an effective and committed team and are enthusiastic and knowledgeable about our School.

Governors undertake half termly Focus Visits/Learning Walks on specific themes, with every Governor undertaking at least one.  Themes for 2015-16 were Marking Practice, Year 3 Transition & Standards, Behaviour & Safety, Reading & Spelling, Inclusion (including Pupil Premium provision), and Curriculum (including Creative Curriculum).  In addition, there was a Focus Visit on SMSC (Social, Moral, Spiritual & Cultural) & British Values.  There were termly Safeguarding and Health & Safety visits and a visit in May for SATs monitoring.  As part of the Focus Visits, Governors spoke to groups of staff and children to seek their views – the meeting of the Pupil Parliament was particularly insightful.  Views of parents are collected through surveys, verbal feedback and the Parents’ Forum.

As part of supporting the School, Governors have also attended the School on many occasions, including Year Group Assemblies & Performances, the Summer Festivals, the School Fair, class assemblies, weekly Principal/Chair of Governors meetings, traffic patrol, and undertaken audits on Health & Safety, Safeguarding, website compliance and their statutory obligations.  A review of agreed actions for 2015-16 has been completed. 

A range of training is provided in-house, through the LA or by Aspirations.  This year Governors have received training on Child Protection, the OfSTED framework, Assessment, Safer Recruitment, PREVENT (Safeguarding), Pupil Premium, Achievement for All and SMSC.
